Grosses Walsertal biosphere reserve – Energy Model Region

100% power from renewable energy sources and 100% regional energy supply.

grosesWith the declaration of the biosphere park the inhabitants of the “Walsertal“ contributed to protect the valley “Grosses Walsertal” by applying sustainable and ecologically compatible development. Thus, the fascinating region ensures a high quality of life and living space for following generations. In doing so, a future proof energy production with renewable energy sources plays a major role, with regard to the increasing global warming and the limited supplies of fossil fuels.

The goal is clearly defined: 100% power from renewable energy sources and 100% regional energy supply. With a quota of 84% eco-power the goal of supplying 100% power from renewable energy sources is places within reach.

e5 Programme

This program involves the support, awarding and networking of municipalities in the sectors of energy efficiency and climate protection. The main goal is to distribute an advanced energy policy. Every three years the e5 municipalities undergo a control and get awarded with up to five “e” ‘s.

Valued are development and regional planning, municipal buildings and facilities, supply and disposal, mobility, intern organizations, communication and cooperation. Currently the “Grosses Walsertal” has four “e” ‘s , awarded by an international jury and supported by the energy department of Vorarlberg.

Project “e-Regio”

In 2009 the region made up perspectives for the development to a eco-energy export region with a widespread process (project e-Regio I). This aim is ambitious but still realistic, as the results of five workshops, working intensively on this issue, illustrates. In the following years this measures should be put into practice within the framework of the follow-up project “e-Regio II”.

This is how the valley is meant to become oil-fired-boiler free, a mobility-center already was established in the Biosphere park office and the energy efficiency in agricultural businesses will be improved – just to name a few measures.
