100 % Renewable Energy Galápagos Islands Project

ERGAL project.
Archipiélago de Colon (Biosphere reserve and World Heritage site).

galapagosvisewerThe project ERGAL – Proyecto Energías Renovables para Galápagos – is coordinating the implementation of renewable energy projects at the archipelago of Galápagos, Ecuador.

Currently, this concerns projects on all inhabited islands, in particular a 700 kW photovoltaic (PV) generator at Isabella (grid-connected), a 20 kW PV generator with battery storage and the conversion of the existing diesel power plant to Jatropha oil in Floreana and a wind park in three phases with up to 30 MW in- stalled power at Santa Cruz/Baltra.

In 2006, the government of Ecuador has started the initiative “Cero Combustibles Fósiles en Galápagos” planning to phase out the consumption of fossil fuels at the Galápagos Islands by the year 2015.
