Carbon-Free island in tourist transport

The STARTER Project for Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve (Spain)

RENforFuerteSTARTER aims to promote energy efficient and sustainable mobility policies and practices through the cooperation of all local interested parties.

The concept of Local Travel Plan Networks (LTPN) will be applied in 5 sites across Europe to engage relevant stakeholders (authorities and representatives from the transport and touristic sector) in the adoption of a common strategy aiming to shift a significant proportion of the transport load from the private cars to more sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility options (target 10% primary energy savings and 10% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions).

The implementation of soft measures (i.e. information, communication, etc.) will provide both local residents and tourists with alternative solutions for transport and increase their awareness regarding the impacts of environmental pollution and energy loss, as well as put emphasis on the positive effects resulting from the use of sustainable transport modes. By doing this, STARTER provides both residents and tourists with a region that has more to offer: more travel options, more freedom, more fun and a healthier environment.

Good Practices – Sustainable Mobility – Tourism without emissions

The Starter Project and Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve, with the support of BiosphereSmart, have proceeded to identify the European best practices in sustainable mobility. This information is available through access to the Biosphere Smart platform.

Through interactive maps may be consulted all of the examples that show the success stories on Carbon-free tourism mobility.
