The Solar Explorer

A solar educational and research vessel owned and operated by the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

k-IMG_4938-3The “Solar Explorer” drive around the Werbellinsee in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Schorfheide-Chorin. The boat is powered exclusively by solar power. The floating laboratory is designed as a research and training ship for students and visitors.

Questions around the topic of renewable energies and the aquatic environment are researched and answered in this 18 meter catamaran . The focus is on teaching erlebnisbezogenem. The young researchers will be enabled projects to work independently, to design and implement.

The aim is to develop a understanding of renewable energies as well as of ecosystems and their protection for sustaining our life in the future. The “Solar Explorer” support and an expanded existing services and curriculum in Brandenburg and Berlin with practical project units.

Students and interested passengers can have concrete insight about the production and use of solar energy gained for the boat. For this purpose the ship was designed with glass panels to see the power units in operation.

A retractable glass floor allows a direct view into the water. In addition, a remote-controlled underwater camera to monitor the drive and the flora and fauna in the lake send live images on the big screen on board to 50 meters depth.
