Green lodges in the heart of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve

g2_272194The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is a 37000 ha, privately owned game reserve in the heart of the Waterberg. It forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve which was officially declared by UNESCO in 2001 – currently covering an area in excess of 4000 km².

It first started as a conservation area in 1993 through a private sector initiative that resulted in the consolidation of numerous private farms. There are 52 private luxury lodges on Welgevonden. In March 2012 Lerumo was selected as the preferred supplier of Solar Energy Solutions for the various lodges with the aim of the estate eventually moving “off-grid”.

The lodges and all materials used are eco friendly and completely ‘green’. The lodges blends in to the surrounds and has a low impact on the environment, effort has been made to ensure the lodge is sustainable and has a very low carbon footprint. The lodge makes use of solar powered renewable energy and sustainable borehole water with solar supply, environ-friendly paints and consumables have been used, no hard woods used in construction, completely sustainable water supply, eco-friendly sewerage systems.
