Base Crestones lodge solar powered
Chirripo National Park is located in the core zone of La Amistad BIOSPHERE RESERVE. Wastewater produced by park visitors who stay at the Base Crestones lodge has been successfully managed by installing solar collectors. Besides that, the energy produced is used for lighting the lodge, heating the rangers house, prepare food, and operate the telecommunications system used by park management. In that place daily average temperatures are 5°C, and minimum temperatures go down to 0°C.

About 20% of the electricity produced in Costa Rica has its origin in a small hydroelectric plant takes water inside the La Amistad biosphere reserve.
This energy is supplied to the national interconnected electric system to meet the electricity needs of Costa Rica.
