Renewable Energy Project to Light up Borobudur World Heritage site

Solarizing Borobudur project.

borobudurThe Borobudur temple is the world’s largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surrounding park is set to showcase Indonesia’s renewable energy potential, with the installation of solar-powered park lights.

The project, ‘Solarising Borobodur’ is initiated by Greenpeace, with the Borobudur Conservation Agency (Balai Konservasi Borobudur), to urge the Indonesian government to implement a massive uptake of renewable energy (RE) sources and to decrease dependence on dirty fossil fuels such as coal.

The solar-powered lighting system will be switched in a week time. A key focus of Greenpeace’s activities centres on the Climate Rescue Station, a four-storey tall spherical structure used by Greenpeace as a mobile museum to generate awareness about renewable energy solutions to combat climate change. It has been used around the world as a platform to support Greenpeace’s vision that ordinary people can do something to stop climate change.
