48 MW wind power project in Puerto Galera biosphere reserve

Integration of large-scale wind power in Mindoro island (Philipines).

PuertoGaleraPuerto Galera Wind Energy Power Systems proposes to install a 48 MW total capacity wind energy power system to supply electricity to the island grid of Mindoro in the Philippines.

The produced electricity will be delivered to the National Power Corporation Small Power Utility Group (NPC-SPUG) 69 kV sub-transmission line at an interconnection point near the site. Off-takers include the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (ORMECO) and Occidental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (OMECO).

The total average electricity production is projected at about 147.168 GWh per year and is expected to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by an estimated 96,345 tCO2-eq annually.

The project activity will promote sustainable development through the following:

  • Utilizing and developing the wind resource in the area to supply clean and sustainable energy to Mindoro’s island grid;
  • Reducing the country’s reliance on imported fuel;
  • Creating job opportunities over the project construction and operation period;
  • Contributing towards energy self-sufficiency and the global objective of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The Project is located in PHESI’s contract area in Puerto Galera, Mindoro and covers a total area of 324 ha. The Project will be constructed in three phases of 16 MW wind energy capacity each. Twenty-four 2 MW wind turbine generators will be put up at the project site, located at Mt. Paitan.

The project is being developed jointly by Philippine Hybrid Energy Systems, Inc. Italian power utility developer CMC Asia, Inc. and turbine manufacturer and building contractor Gamesa Eolica of Spain.
