Sustainable tourism experience in World Heritage Site Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California.
Cabo Pulmo is a conservation success story of local, national, and international significance. In the 1970s-80s, rampant overfishing severely degraded the reef. Local communities recognized that fact, and petitioned the government to make the area a national park, which it did in 1995. In 2005, UNESCO named Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park a World Heritage Site, and in 2008 it became a Ramsar Wetlands Site of International Importance.
Cabo Pulmo is also a very special Baja destination and just may be the the perfect example of what we mean when we say “The Real Baja”. This small village, of less than 150 residents, has done more to preserve their heritage and lifestyle than any other place in Baja. This village on the shores of the Sea of Cortez does take advantage of solar power, wind power and generators.
Vacation rentals in the village of Cabo Pulmo are solar powered. Many houses are topped by palalpas – traditional Mexican-style palm-thatched roofs.
