Protective measures against landslides

The Arena Beach is located in the Municipal Term of Tacoronte on the Island of Tenerife. There have been numerous rock detachments that have been recorded, at least for more than 60 years, without any of them having caused casualties. The last detachment occurred on 01/29/2014, determined the closure of the beach.

Innovative techniques have been used in the project, such as the simulation of landslides made with 3D and 2D software, which, along with the analysis of other variables, determined areas of detachment in almost all the slopes of the study area.

The projected actions consisted mainly of passive type protections (dynamic barriers), which intercept the trajectories of the landslides before they reach the beach. Active measures were discarded throughout the area, composed for example of cable networks and wire meshes, being costly solutions, high impact, and sometimes very complex implementation.
