Stability of slopes in volcanic environments

The landslides and other movements of slopes are one of the most common natural hazards in the Canaries, affecting communications and basic services of the community.

  • Stabilization of the cliff of the Parador de La Gomera:

The Parador de Turismo de La Gomera is located on a small plateau with cliff edges that has been the origin of numerous landslides.

In this case, an innovative research methodology was applied to guarantee slope safety, consisting of combining horizontal soundings with an inspection chamber and combined with a high precision topography with a Laser Scanner.

  • Protection measures against landslides on the road.

The Insular Road TF-445 (Tenerife) runs through a mountainous area with high slopes. The detachments were common and despite the installation of anti-detachment measures the road had to be closed.

In this project the initial topographic surveys were accompanied by simulations with 2 and 3D software to corroborate field studies. Subsequently, in addition to various measures of protection in situ and three barriers of flow, the execution of the works meant the installation of dynamic barriers.
