An integrated vision of waste management, energy efficiency and renewables in Menorca biosphere reserve.
Management of waste on the island is handled by the Consortium of Waste and Energy of Menorca (Consorcio de Residuos y Energía de Menorca), which is made up of the eight municipalities of the island and the “Consell Insular” (island government).
This entity was initially created to head up the Milà waste management plant, and over time has become a solid and effective tool for environmental policy regarding waste management, energy conservation, and the advancement of clean energy forms.
The Consortium handles the direct management of the Milà Wind Farm, the Municipal Energy Efficiency Plans, Photo Gallery.
In the area of waste management, the Consortium has provided substantial advancement by offering sustainable solutions for waste management on the island. The planning basis for waste management is the Master Plan (Plan Director de Gestión de Residuos de Menorca), approved in 2006, which laid out the policies for waste management to be in effect on the island for a period of eight years.
The Consortium has promoted public awareness campaigns, as these are considered vital for development of any type of activity. The response to such campaigns by the general public in Menorca has always been extremely positive and has led to reductions in waste, increases in selective waste collection, Photo Gallery.
